<p>I was reading the <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/technology/twitter/">paper</a> at the weekend only to find a 2 page article on <a href="http://twitter.com">Twitter</a> (the microbloggingsocialnetworkphenomenon). A couple of hours later <a href="http://twitter.com/jake">I</a> got a &#8216;new follower&#8217; email from my <a href="http://twitter.com/olliestride">brother</a>.</p>
<p>Neither event were related, my brother later told me he had &#8216;<a href="http://twitter.com/olliestride/status/1192373210">discovered</a>&#8216; Twitter after hearing about it on Radio 1.</p>
<p>I believe it does go to show Twitter is gaining more acceptance and becoming &#8216;like FaceBook&#8217; &#8211; my brother is perfectly &#8216;technology aware&#8217; but arguable has a lot better things to do than spend time on FaceBook/Twitter (he&#8217;s not in IT), he already has a large social group of friends and isn&#8217;t a big FaceBook user to boot.</p>
<p><img title="Twitter Followers" src="http://omelett.es/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/followers1.jpg" alt="Twitter Followers" height="446" width="446"/></p>
<p>With more and more UK celebrities joining Twitter it&#8217;s <a href="http://weblogs.hitwise.com/robin-goad/2009/01/twitter_traffic_up_10-fold.html">growth</a> in the UK is <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/technology/twitter/4307715/Twitter-traffic-up-974-per-cent-in-a-year.html">soaring</a> (those are a handful of people &#8216;following&#8217; me in the above image), however I&#8217;m not sure everyone will <a href="http://twitter.com/olliestride/status/1188422103">see the value</a> without some tweaks from Twitter.</p>
<p><strong>What are your thoughts</strong>, and why did you join Twitter?</p>

		</div>
<p>A couple of times a year I try to raise some money for charity in a fun and interesting way &#8211; I&#8217;ve sold a <a href="http://omelett.es/journal/2008/06/16/cat-5-ethernet-dog-lead/">Cat 5 dog lead</a>, sponsored <a href="http://www.twestival.com">Twestival</a>, and <a href="http://www.spendmeter.com/about">donated some of the profits from Spend Meter to charity</a>.</p>
<p>This year I thought I&#8217;d try something different &#8211; for <a href="http://twitter.com/jake/status/1158417264">every new follower I get on Twitter, I&#8217;ll donate 10p to charity</a>.</p>
<p><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-105" title="Corwd of people - http://flickr.com/photos/victoriapeckham/164175205/" src="http://omelett.es/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/followerssmall.jpg" alt="Corwd of people - http://flickr.com/photos/victoriapeckham/164175205/" width="446" height="335" /></p>
<p>Now don&#8217;t get me wrong, I&#8217;m not forcing people to follow me, or trying to buy friends, I just thought it was a fun way to get people involved in the process &#8211; they can even <a href="http://twtpoll.com/espy67">vote for the charities</a> the money is going to.</p>
<p>So please feel free to pass this on, and we&#8217;ll see how much we can raise.</p>
